Kwanza Member of Parliament, Ferdinand Wanyonyi, has dismissed a recent Court ruling, which declared the Kenya Kwanza coalition as the minority party in Parliament.
The ruling, issued on Friday, overturned the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula’s earlier declaration that President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance is the Majority Party.
The three-judge bench, consisting of Justices John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah, ruled that Wetang’ula’s October 6, 2022 declaration was unconstitutional.
They found that the Speaker had violated the Constitution by declaring Kenya Kwanza as the Majority Party without a sufficient legal basis. As a result, the court quashed Wetang’ula’s declaration and nullified the ruling.
The judges also took issue with Wetang'ula’s dual role as both Speaker and a leader within Ford Kenya, declaring that this arrangement was unlawful.
Despite the court's decision, Wanyonyi argued that the ruling does not reflect the reality in Parliament, stressing that Kenya Kwanza still holds a majority in the House.
"We have a slightly higher number of MPs compared to those in the opposition. This issue is not even relevant at this time," Wanyonyi stated.
He further emphasized that the focus should be on the legislative work of Parliament rather than political power struggles.
"We have a lot of business to conduct for the benefit of Kenyans. The debate over who is the Majority or Minority Party adds no value to the people," he said, urging the country to concentrate on critical issues affecting the citizens.
Wanyonyi’s comments came during his visit to Bidii Mjini village, where he was joined by officials from Kenya Power to launch the process of connecting the village to electricity.
He underscored the importance of the project, stating that the residents of Bidii Mjini had long been in the dark, missing out on the opportunities and developments that electricity brings.
"We want to ensure this village is connected to electricity, as the residents have been in the dark, missing out on the developments that come with it," Wanyonyi added.
