An aspirant for the county assembly seat in Nabiswa Ward, Trans Nzoia County, has called on security agencies in Kiminini Sub County to fast-track their investigation and apprehend a group of 40 individuals who attacked him after he left a funeral.
Mr. Evans Nyongesa Nasiuma and one of his team members, Emmanuel Wasike, were leaving thefuneral of Pastor Maurice Khaemba’s wife at Masaba Phase A village when they were waylaid by a gang wielding crude weapons.
"We had just left the funeral when some youths approached us and began assaulting us, accusing me of causing political disturbance to their agenda. One even attempted to stab me with a knife, but his colleagues intervened,” said Mr. Nasiuma.
The two were frog-marched and thoroughly beaten by the unruly youths, who later confiscated their belongings, stealing their money and phones, while leaving them with serious injuries and a death threat if Mr. Nasiuma did not stop his political ambition.
“We sought medical attention and later reported the matter at the Kiminini Police Station, but we have not seen any apprehensions. Yet, those who assaulted us are walking scot-free and issuing further threats,” he said.
Mr. Nasiuma urged the youth to stop being used by politicians to attack their opponents, saying everyone has a constitutional right to declare interest in any political seat and the freedom of expression.
“The youth should shun violence and instead join forces with voices that are speaking to the current leadership in search of accountability, since they have also been affected by poor governance,” said the aspirant.
Mr. Nasiuma, who also attended the funeral of Ms. Lydia Tokesi Bukhala at Masaba, joined her family in demanding justice so that those who heinously murdered her and dumped her body in Ngong Forest are brought to book.
“We urge the government to find a lasting solution to the ongoing cases of femicide in the country, as this has become a serious threat to women. Lydia was at a prime age, and her family has suffered a tremendous loss,” he said.
