Governor Natembeya Launches Free Seed Maize Distribution for Small-Scale Farmers in Trans Nzoia

Trans Nzoia Governor, George Natembeya, today launched a free seed maize distribution initiative aimed at supporting smallholder farmers across the region.

The exercise was launched in Sinyereri Ward, where farmers received packets of maize seeds from the Kenya Seed Company, specifically the variety 6213.

Governor Natembeya emphasized the county government's commitment to boosting maize production through direct support for small-scale farmers.

"We have made deliberate efforts as a county government to support small-scale farmers to enhance their maize production," he stated.

The programme, which will extend to all 25 wards in Trans Nzoia, aims to relieve farmers from the financial burden of purchasing seeds.

"This is a 100% subsidy program designed to enhance agricultural production for improved food security," the Governor added.

Natembeya also called on the National Government to consider subsidizing the cost of planting fertilizers distributed through the National Cereals and Produce Board.

"Maize farmers have been incurring losses due to the high production costs, which are not aligned with the low market prices," he remarked.

The County Executive Committee Member in charge of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Phanice Khatundi urged farmers to take advantage of the current rains.

"It’s great that the rains are back, and farmers must now plant on time to reap the full benefits of their labor," she advised.

Nursing services in public health facilities across Trans Nzoia County have been severely disrupted due to a strike by nurses. The strike was triggered by the county government's failure to address several key issues raised by the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), the union representing healthcare workers. KNUNM Trans Nzoia Secretary, Edward Cheruiyot, stated that despite mediation efforts by the Ministry of Labour, which appointed a conciliator, no resolution had been reached. “The union has done its part, but the government has failed to avert the strike. The conciliator was appointed, but no meetings have taken place, and no progress has been made,” Cheruiyot said. At the core of the strike are several unresolved issues. One of the primary concerns is the failure to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025-2029 period. "Negotiations for the CBA have stalled. The government promised to form a committee to address the matter, ...
