Kenya Seed Company Calls on Merchants to Align Maize Seed Prices with Subsidy Programme

The Kenya Seed Company has urged merchants of its maize seed products to reduce their prices in line with the government's subsidy programme.

The company's Managing Director, Sammy Chepsiror, stated that the company's subsidised retail maize seed price of Sh 210 per kilogram should be reflected in their prices.

"We expect all accredited stockists and seed agents to comply with the price reduction following the subsidy programme," Mr Chepsiror said at the company's sponsored golf tournament at Kitale Club.

The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Paul Rono, recently said the government disbursed Sh 1 billion to the Seed Company to support the subsidy programme.

The company has so far distributed 18 million kilograms of seed maize to farmers across the country, with 12 million kilograms still in stock.

"We have enough seed to meet the demand of farmers. We urge farmers to purchase their seed from our certified stockists to avoid falling victim to counterfeit seed sales," said Mr Chepsiror.

The Kenya Seed Company's capacity will meet 65% of the Kenyan maize seed demand, while the rest is shared among private firms.

The golf tournament featured 120 players from various clubs, with the best golfers receiving an Ayrshire heifer and other awards.

"We are grateful to the company for organising this event," said Mrs Mercy Anjugua, the Chairperson of the Kitale Golf Club and a contracted maize seed grower.

The strike was triggered by the county government's failure to address several key issues raised by the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), the union representing healthcare workers. KNUNM Trans Nzoia Secretary, Edward Cheruiyot, stated that despite mediation efforts by the Ministry of Labour, which appointed a conciliator, no resolution had been reached. “The union has done its part, but the government has failed to avert the strike. The conciliator was appointed, but no meetings have taken place, and no progress has been made,” Cheruiyot said. At the core of the strike are several unresolved issues. One of the primary concerns is the failure to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025-2029 period. "Negotiations for the CBA have stalled. The government promised to form a committee to address the matter, ...
