Luhya Leaders Advocate for Unity as They Pay Tribute to Wafula Chebukati

Calls for political unity in Western Kenya took center stage during the tribute service for the late Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Wafula Chebukati at his Sabata farm home in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia."

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula said it is prudent for leaders in the region to work in unity instead of focusing on supremacy battles.

"It is in the best interest of our community to come together as one to champion our interests instead of engaging in fights," said Mr. Wetang'ula.

Kiminini Member of Parliament Kakai Bisau stated that the time has come for the region to unite under one political umbrella for future political endeavors.

"We have no space for divisive politics being furthered by leaders who are hell-bent on attacking others. We are being reduced to a laughing stock," said Mr. Bisau.

Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka said the region will only achieve stronger political gains if it learns to rally behind one leader.

"Other leaders are rallying behind specific leaders for political direction, yet for us, we have everyone claiming kingship," observed Governor Lusaka.

Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang rallied leaders from the region, regardless of their ethnic or political affiliation, to avoid politics of mudslinging.

"We have all seen attacks being leveled at our leaders, but we are certain that Speaker Wetang'ula has all it takes to move us forward," said Mr. Chesang.

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi criticized certain leaders, accusing them of engaging in what he described as “juvenile politics” that lack strategic thought.

“Politics is a game of strategies, not just rallying crowds. Those who rely on this brand of politics will not go far,” he asserted.

Likuyani Member of Parliament Innocent Mugabe emphasized that the unity of the Luhya community is crucial in shaping its political future on the national stage.

"We, as a community, must make a conscious decision to support national leaders who are at the forefront, rather than attacking them aimlessly," he said.

Former Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba called out leaders from the Bukusu community for engaging in retrogressive politics.

One of the primary concerns is the failure to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025-2029 period. "Negotiations for the CBA have stalled. The government promised to form a committee to address the matter, ...
