Trans Nzoia Youth Slam Nandi Senator Cherargei Over Impeachment Call for Governor Natembeya

A section of youth from Trans Nzoia County has sharply condemned Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei following his remarks suggesting that Governor George Natembeya should be impeached based on false claims of tribalism.

The youth questioned the Senator’s apparent obsession with Trans Nzoia County’s affairs, urging him to instead address pressing issues in his own backyard.

"We are telling the Senator to keep off the affairs of Trans Nzoia and focus on cleaning the mess by his own Governor Stephen Sang," said Mr. Brian Mutaki while addressing the press in Kitale.

The youth also condemned what they described as tribal undertones in Cherargei’s attacks on Natembeya, emphasizing that Trans Nzoia is a cosmopolitan county.

"Trans Nzoia enjoys cohesion amongst all the communities that reside here, and trying to invoke tribal emotions to achieve a political agenda is misplaced," noted Mr. Mutaki.

They went on to accuse some elected leaders in the region of allegedly teaming up with politicians from other counties to undermine Governor Natembeya’s leadership.

"We have confidence in Governor Natembeya, and we, the residents of Trans Nzoia, are the ones with the right to make choices on our leaders instead of being directed by outsiders," noted Mr. Jack Were.

The sentiments came amid a bold response from Governor Natembeya, who challenged Senator Cherargei’s claims on ethnic exclusion in county appointments.

"My drivers are Kalenjins, the head of my security team is a Sabaot, and my team includes members of the Nandi, Sabaot, and every other community in Trans Nzoia. Cherargei, can you tell me how many Bukusu individuals you have employed?" posed Governor Natembeya.

The youth also urged theNational Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to take action against Senator Cherargei for fueling division in the guise of advancing a political agenda.

Nursing services in public health facilities across Trans Nzoia County have been severely disrupted due to a strike by nurses. The strike was triggered by the county government's failure to address several key issues raised by the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), the union representing healthcare workers. KNUNM Trans Nzoia Secretary, Edward Cheruiyot, stated that despite mediation efforts by the Ministry of Labour, which appointed a conciliator, no resolution had been reached. “The union has done its part, but the government has failed to avert the strike. The conciliator was appointed, but no meetings have taken place, and no progress has been made,” Cheruiyot said. At the core of the strike are several unresolved issues. One of the primary concerns is the failure to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025-2029 period. "Negotiations for the CBA have stalled. The government promised to form a committee to address the matter, ...
