Waitaluk Ward came alive with energy and enthusiasm as
residents gathered for a vibrant cross-country event designed to nurture local
talent and support educational opportunities for underprivileged students.
Led by the area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Lusweti
Furaha, the event united local youth and leaders under a shared mission: to
promote athletic talent while raising funds for bursaries benefiting needy
students across the ward.
“The funds raised through this event will significantly help
sponsor students who are unable to continue their education due to financial
challenges,” Mr. Furaha remarked during the event’s launch.
Currently, 534 students from the ward are enrolled at Kitale
National Polytechnic, thanks to the personal intervention of the ward
representative—demonstrating his strong commitment to technical and
skills-based education.
Mr. Furaha also underscored the importance of empowering the
youth through vocational training programs, noting that such initiatives
enhance employability, foster self-reliance, and play a key role in addressing
youth unemployment.
Area Governor George Natembeya, who attended the event,
reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to supporting education and
community development initiatives like the cross-country race, which contribute
to the county’s socioeconomic transformation.
“We remain firmly committed to initiatives that empower our
people and uplift communities,” said the Governor. “Let us stay focused on the
growth and development of our county, especially as poverty continues to hinder
progress.”
The Chief of Staff in the Office of the Speaker of the
National Assembly, Benson Milimo, highlighted the added value of such events in
fostering interaction among residents—promoting unity and cohesion in this
diverse, cosmopolitan region.
County Assembly Clerk Moses Lupao applauded the community’s
unity and stressed the importance of grassroots initiatives in advancing
development goals, emphasizing that sustainable progress begins with active
local participation and collective effort.
The races were officiated by the regional office of
Athletics Kenya, which highlighted the importance of such gatherings in
offering a platform for budding athletes to showcase their skills and be
nurtured into future professionals.
