Maendeleo ya Wanawake Leaders Condemn Divisive Politics in Trans Nzoia

Maendeleo ya Wanawake leaders in Trans Nzoia County have condemned the rising trend of political name-calling and character assassination, warning that such divisive tactics threaten both development and social cohesion in the region.

The leaders emphasized the urgent need to restore decency and respect in political discourse, urging for a shift toward issue-based engagement.

“We need unity for development. We are missing out on progress because the ongoing political attacks have made it difficult to create a conducive environment for development, especially from the national government,” said the group's treasurer Margaret Wanjala.

Mrs. Wanjala also came to the defense of her party leader, National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, rejecting accusations that he is anti-development.

“Respect is paramount for every leader. Wetang'ula has his responsibilities as Speaker, and he should be respected,” said the Ford Kenya nominated MCA.

kwanza subcounty secretary of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Beatrice Kitiabi noted that divisive politics fail to address the socio-economic challenges faced by residents.

“We must put an end to the politics of name-shaming. Leaders deserve respect. We are tired of disrespectful politics and those who undermine others,” said Mrs. Kitiabi.

Edah Keter, the county secretary, called for greater attention to gender-based violence, which she said has led to a disturbing rise in femicide.

“We must address gender-based violence. We also need to implement the two-thirds gender rule to ensure women’s voices are heard and represented in leadership,” she said.

The leaders stressed that without mutual respect and inclusive governance, the county risks stagnating in its development agenda.

They urged political players to prioritize unity, dialogue, and the common good of all residents over personal or party interests.

The leaders made their remarks during a visit to the home of Ms. Wanjala, where they gathered to honor her long-standing service to the women’s movement.

The event, attended by grassroots women leaders and community members, also served as a platform to recognize Ms. Wanjala’s dedication to women’s empowerment and her unwavering commitment to Maendeleo ya Wanawake over the years.
