The Boda Boda fraternity in Trans Nzoia County has ushered in a new leadership team, ending a 13-year reign of the outgoing officials.
The elections, organized by the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAKE), brought together over 650 stage chairmen who voted to elect new officials for the positions of Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Vincent Murunga emerged as the new Chairman, pledging to prioritize safety training and improve the welfare of riders across the county.
“We are going to ensure that we bring sanity among our members so that we achieve growth,” said Mr. Murunga shortly after his victory.
James Nyakangi, who clinched the Secretary position, promised to streamline the operations of the association for greater efficiency and accountability.
“We need an orderly way of running our affairs to ensure the interests of all members are well represented,” he said.
The new Treasurer, Joseph Amudavi Mukirima, assured members of prudent financial management and transparency in handling association funds.
According to BAKE’s national president, Kevin Mbadi, the election process was peaceful and transparent, despite earlier fears of intimidation among some candidates.
“We are happy the process was smooth and credible. We have good plans going forward, especially on rider welfare and safety,” said Mr. Mbadi.
The national leadership of BAKE announced plans to commemorate World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 16, in honor of riders who have lost their lives on the roads.
“We must continue to raise awareness about safety and responsible riding,” added Mr. Mbadi, noting that the association will soon roll out new programs aimed at reducing road accidents.
In a bid to modernize operations, the association also revealed plans to work with service providers to set up charging stations for electric motorcycles, an initiative expected to promote clean energy and lower running costs for riders.
