Housing Committee Unveils Transformative Projects Across Trans Nzoia

Kiminini MP Kakai Bissau has spearheaded the launch of multiple infrastructural projects aimed at driving economic empowerment and addressing the needs of his constituents.

Joined by Trans Nzoia Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi and members of the Departmental Committee on Housing, including Chairperson Johanna Ng’eno, Jane Kagiri, and Joseph Cherorot, the day was marked by several key site handovers.

The day’s events began with the handover of a contract for the construction of a 146 million shilling student hostel facility at Kiminini Technical and Vocational College.

Describing the project as a “game changer,” Bissau highlighted how the new facility would ease the long-standing issue of overcrowded student accommodation. This development will not only expand student capacity but will also improve living conditions and elevate the college’s status as a leading institution for technical and vocational training.

“The lack of adequate accommodation has been a long-standing challenge, and this project will go a long way in improving student welfare and facilitating quality education. It aligns with the Affordable Housing Programme of President William Ruto’s government, which seeks to provide affordable housing solutions to all Kenyans," Bissau said.

After the hostel project launch, the team proceeded to Kiminini Market for the official handover of the site for the construction of a new, modern market. Funded by the National Government, the market will feature state-of-the-art stalls, organized trading spaces, a conference hall, Wi-Fi connectivity, a breastfeeding area for mothers, and improved sanitation and security facilities.

“The National Government’s continued partnership and support have been invaluable. We are committed to ensuring that our people are the primary beneficiaries of these projects, not just in terms of infrastructure, but also through employment opportunities,” Bissau added, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing local hiring during and after construction.

Trans Nzoia Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi spoke passionately about the market’s significance, calling it an investment in the livelihoods and future prosperity of Kiminini’s residents.

“This upgrade will not only enhance the working environment for local vendors but also drive economic growth by creating jobs and fostering a more organized and efficient marketplace. This project is more than just a market; it is an investment in the future of our people,” said Siyoi.

Mr. Ng’eno, highlighted the critical role of the government’s Affordable Housing Programme in addressing the housing crisis facing many Kenyans.

“The government’s affordable housing initiative is about restoring dignity to the people of Kenya,” Ng’eno said. “It ensures that Kenyans can own homes at affordable rates, thus alleviating the housing crisis and empowering citizens to build a better future.”

The team later handed over a site for the construction of a new student hostel at Kitale National Polytechnic. With the rising number of students at the polytechnic, existing accommodation facilities have struggled to keep pace.

The new hostel will help address this growing demand, providing students with more space and better living conditions that will enhance their overall educational experience.

Nursing Services Paralyzed in Trans Nzoia as Nurses Down Tools

Nursing services in public health facilities across Trans Nzoia County have been severely disrupted due to a strike by nurses. The strike was triggered by the county government's failure to address several key issues raised by the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), the union representing healthcare workers. KNUNM Trans Nzoia Secretary, Edward Cheruiyot, stated that despite mediation efforts by the Ministry of Labour, which appointed a conciliator, no resolution had been reached. “The union has done its part, but the government has failed to avert the strike. The conciliator was appointed, but no meetings have taken place, and no progress has been made,” Cheruiyot said. At the core of the strike are several unresolved issues. One of the primary concerns is the failure to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the 2025-2029 period. "Negotiations for the CBA have stalled. The government promised to form a committee to address the matter, ...
